I paint live at the NWSS in Denver every January. There are so many animals that you normally can't get close to and live to finish the painting. Since it is usually pretty cold and the animals are moving about in their pens I concentrate on painting just the animals and finish the background later by laying in the metal leaf. The gold leaf also gives the work an amazing liveliness because as the light changes throughout the day so does the painting.
