While visiting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I happened upon a children's boon in the LaFonda Hotel gift shop. The book was entitled “The Goat In The Rug” and told about a Navajo weaver and her angora goat.
From the start of the story – which is told by the goat – it was clear that there was a deep bond between the two; each relying on the other in a kind of special friendship.
This story inspired me to sculpt “A Friend In Need.” Hopefully it captures the special bond between us and our animals – and our mutual dependence on each other.
My two angora goats – Dooney and Burk – graciously consented to model for the sculpture.
