Iconic image of “the West”, the buffalo is the giver of life and represents all that sustains the peoples of the plains….food, clothing, shelter, warmth. The buffalo skull is used on the altar in all the ceremonies, because it is a symbol of the sacredness of all life and our connection to the Great Spirit that takes care of us.. I wanted to do a representation of something traditionally western in nature, that is meaningful to me, but paint it with a contemporary twist since it is as relevant today as it the Plains Peoples who lived on this land. To that end I painted the skull in a traditional manner but used the background space as a means to play around with some abstraction to give it a more contemporary feel.
