The hackamore has its own fascination to western horsemen. The one that gets the most attention is a bosal on a simple headstall, with a fiador and mecate all tied with the traditional knots. A person who knows how to use this properly is a hackamore reinsman.
However, in practical application, there are a couple of simple variations of this. One is called a loping hackamore we use when warming up our cutting horses. It helps horse relax. And another is shown in this painting, a simple version made of soft rope, commonly called a breaking hackamore for starting colts.
