The Greensong series of paintings began as a way for me to experiment in abstracting some forest scenes. I used a painting I wasn’t happy with as the underpainting. I love painting over old paintings or ones that I didn’t want to bother to finish or that I had become bored with. There are lots of aspens where I live, and the painting I was painting over had a few in it. I wanted to keep the idea and feeling of the aspen groves, but really take it to a different place. It’s challenging to let go of the idea of painting the object (the trees). Once I got going though, it was hard to stop. Achieving freedom from the boundaries of the actual subject is the goal to which I am aspiring here.
