This was done from a 9x12 study I also did at my artist friend’s house in Durango. She happened to own a home and property that was used in scenes for the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. This grouping of trees was in her back yard and we painted on a sunny, but cold day. I used the shapes in the study to make this larger painting, freeing myself from the confines of the actual scene, and allowing a kind of intuitive painting to happen. It became an “excavation” of sorts, digging out, scraping back to find color and value in the underpainting that would support the play of the light or shadow shapes. The Sundance Kid may just have ridden thru this grove where the sun is now dancing in the painting.
